This chapter will discuss payment systems, their risks and developments, and the international work of establishing universal standards for payment systems. It also discusses how payment systems in various countries adhere to internationally agreed upon standards for payment systems. The discussion draws extensively on the work done by the Basel-based Committee on Payment and Settlement Systems (CPSS) and findings under the IMF-World Bank joint Financial Sector Assessment Program (FSAP).1
