Qu'est-ce que l'Asie d'un point de vue économique ? À première vue, la réponse est simple : l'Asie est la locomotive de l'économie mondiale, avec des taux de croissance remarquables depuis plusieurs décennies. Mais si on y regarde de plus près, la diversité saute aux yeux. Au-delà des gros titres, le paysage est complexe et très contrasté. Dans ce numéro de F&D, nous l'examinons sous différents angles, en essayant de donner un éclairage sur le présent, et l'avenir, économique de la région. Selon Changyong Rhee dans « L'Asie et son potentiel », la région devra surmonter cinq grands défis pour poursuivre son parcours économique spectaculaire. Dans « Mutation à la chinoise », David Dollar examine le rééquilibrage de l'économie chinoise, au profit de la consommation et non plus de l'investissement, et ses conséquences pour les économies en développement de la région. Shika Jha et Juzhong Zhuang nous expliquent l'importance d'institutions fortes et de la bonne gouvernance pour l'avenir de l'Asie dans « La gouvernance dans tous ses états ». Dans « Le style asiatique », Alan Wheatley se penche sur le rôle grandissant des produits culturels dans l'économie de la région, sur fond d'augmentation du revenu disponible. Le Gouverneur de la Banque centrale de Malaisie, Zeti Akhtar Aziz, nous fait part de son point de vue sur la résilience de l’Asie et ce que la région peut faire pour s'adapter aux transitions financières et économiques en cours dans le reste du monde. Tout cela est complété par des articles sur l'Australie, le kimchi (spécialité coréenne) ainsi que le rayonnement mondial et l'avenir de la finance asiatique. Par ailleurs, nous pesons le pour et le contre de l'arrimage du taux de change, explorons la relation entre économie et vertu, et examinons comment la dette d'un pays pourrait menacer sa croissance à moyen terme. Enfin, la rubrique «Paroles d'économistes» brosse le portrait de Christopher Pissarides, dont les travaux innovants sur le chômage et les marchés du travail lui ont valu le Prix Nobel en 2010.

En distribuant des moustiquaires pour combattre le paludisme, en construisant des écoles, ou bien encore en offrant un assainissement de base, la philanthropie aide à transformer le monde en développement. De riches donateurs consacrent des fortunes — souvent bâties dans les logiciels, le spectacle ou le capital-risque — pour vaincre la pauvreté et promouvoir le bien-être, servant d’appoint à l’aide publique, ou parfois même la dépassant. De Bill et Melinda Gates et Warren Buffett à Aliko Dangote et George Soros, les titans du capitalisme financent de nobles causes. Qu’il s’agisse de créer de nouveaux vaccins, de construire des bibliothèques ou de protéger la forêt amazonienne, les philanthropes appuient l’innovation sous toutes ses formes pour améliorer les conditions de vie et nourrir les aspirations. Ce numéro de F&D examine le monde de la philanthropie ciblée et de l’entreprenariat social. «La philanthropie a un rôle d’amorçage», déclare Bill Gates, le cofondateur de Microsoft, et le plus généreux donateur de la planète. «La fondation s’efforce de mettre en place un système qui permette aux forces du marché d’œuvrer en faveur des pauvres». Selon lui, l’effet de catalyse de la philanthropie peut être déterminant. «Les bonnes idées ont besoin d’apôtres et les laissés-pour-compte de défenseurs». L’ex-président Bill Clinton explique que les réseaux de coopération créative entre les États, les entreprises et la société civile peuvent mieux réussir à résoudre les problèmes les plus pressants de la planète. Prakash Loungani brosse le portrait de l’économiste superstar Jeffrey Sachs, champion de l’allègement de la dette et des objectifs du Millénaire pour le développement. Nous examinons en quoi les pays pauvres peuvent avoir intérêt à distribuer une partie des recettes exceptionnelles qu'ils tirent des ressources naturelles au lieu de financer des investissements pouvant être source de corruption. La rubrique Gros plan explique ce que font les banques centrales pour combattre la crise dans les pays avancés. Enfin, nous découvrons en quoi la croissance chinoise est une source de créativité pour le monde occidental.

Au sommaire de ce numéro, intitulé « Comment assumer le poids des ans » : la baisse des taux de fécondité et l'augmentation de l'espérance de vie mettent à mal la capacité de nombreux pays d’assurer un niveau de vie décent pour leurs seniors sans imposer une charge écrasante aux jeunes. Dans l'article de fond, Ronald Lee et Andrew Mason expliques qu'il est certain que le vieillissement de la population dans les pays industrialisés riches et dans certains pays à revenu intermédiaire ou à faible revenu va mettre les budgets publics et privés à rude épreuve, mais qu'en agissant sur plusieurs fronts (réduction de la consommation, relèvement de l’âge de la retraite, accumulation d’actifs et investissements plus importants dans le capital humain), il devrait être possible de relever le défi sans entraîner de conséquences catastrophiques. Neil Howe et Richard Jackson nous donnent un classement étonnant des pays les mieux et les moins bien préparés à absorber une vague de retraités qui s'amplifie. Plusieurs articles sont consacrés à diverses questions d'actualité, dont le chômage au Moyen-Orient, les répercussions économiques du séisme et du tsunami dévastateurs au Japon et les activités bancaires des places financières offshore telles que les Îles Caïmans. Carmen Reinhart et Jacob Kirkegaard examinent comment les gouvernements s'arrangent pour manipuler les marchés afin de contenir le coût du financement d'énormes dettes publiques et, dans la rubrique Entre nous, Min Zhu, du FMI, explique que les pays émergents doivent s'adapter à la nouvelle réalité mondiale en mettant à profit leur réussite économique et en s'attaquant à certains de leurs problèmes à long terme. Dans Paroles d'économistes, Prakash Loungani s'entretient avec le lauréat du prix Nobel George Akerlof et trois autres lauréats, Michael Spence, Joseph Stiglitz et Robert Solow, débattent des conséquences de la crise mondiale et de ce qu'elle nous a enseigné. La rubrique « L’ABC de l’économie » explique les modèles économiques, tandis que « Pleins feux » illustrent les importants écarts du coût des envois de fonds.
