Sustainable forest management, though a desirable environmental goal, is seldom practiced in Latin America (or elsewhere) because it cannot financially compete with alternative forms of land management. The world community must be willing to bear more of the costs if it wants to make sustainable forestry a viable option for countries facing the threat of deforestation.
