Through economic coordination nations modify their national policies in recognition of international economic interdependence. This implies a willingness to reach agreement on remedial measures, if necessary in a concerted manner. Since 1985, the procedural framework devised by the Group of Seven has strengthened the economic coordination achieved within the IMF through the development of international procedures for consultation. If policy coordination is to continue evolving toward being a systematic process, as opposed to an episodic one, the IMF role will have to remain central.
