Abstract

The Organization of American States (OAS) is a regional organization within the United Nations, and it functions largely for the Americas. It is essentially a legal and political organization and has been carrying out legal functions within the hemisphere for all of its 102 years of history. It is the oldest international organization of its kind in the world.
