Abstract

To obtain a realistic assessment of the debt situation during 1972–79, external debt developments must be analyzed in the context of the more inflationary environment that characterized this period. By relating debt magnitudes to other relevant economic variables, a reliable measure of the increase in the real burden of external debt can be obtained.
