Against the background of the global outlook outlined in Chapter 1, this chapter discusses how the main countries and regions that make up the world economy are coping with intense financial strains, high commodity prices, and the global downturn. It then draws policy lessons, with a view to finding an appropriate balance between responding to deteriorating short-term growth prospects, containing inflation, and fostering longer-term growth potential.1
